What comes to mind when you hear the word “economics?” Money, right? And what comes to mind when you think about prosperity? Probably the same.
Unity classes and sermons often refer to prosperity. However, it’s not about stuff; it’s about consciousness. As best-selling Unity author and leader Eric Butterworth put it in his classic book, Spiritual Economics:
“Prosperity is a way of living and thinking…in the broadest sense, (it’s about) spiritual well-being.”
Another key Unity teaching is that we create through our mind (and heart). As the Unity song goes, “Our thoughts are prayers. Be mindful what you’re saying.” So the starting point in realizing prosperity – of whatever kind – is to accept responsibility for our own thoughts.
Like so many Unity teachings, it’s simple but not easy. Fortunately, Unity followers know that practice and faith together bring internal change, which in turn brings external change. It may take time, but change is assured if we are committed to both.
A story is passed around about Unity’s origins. During one particularly tight time, a staff member said, “Let us pray that the money holds out.” To which Unity founder Myrtle Fillmore replied, “Let us pray that our faith holds out.”
